SOUTH-ISTRIAN COAST AND OPATIJA
Italian Riviera flair and a fairytale from an imperial era.
The south coast of Istria continues into the Kvarner bay. The geography of this coast offers a mountainous landscape, with Rijeka as the major capital. Rijeka is the main port of Croatia and the main shipping link of the Danube region with the rest of the world.
This area oozes old glamor, with grand palaces along the coast and spacious mansions and stately villas perched on the hills. Along the coast from Rijeka you will find the fairytale places Opatija, Mošćenička Draga, Lovran. These places radiate the grandeur of the period when wealthy citizens, officers and noble families in the Habsburg Empire had their country houses here and visited the spa orders (the Von Trapp family, sung in The Sound of Music, lived in Rijeka; the villa is there yet). The predominant style is Art-Deco. The coast is compared here with Luguria: Portofino and Rapallo. The steep coast offers a lot of sea views for real estate. The prices here are higher than the average in Istria.
